Phi Phi Don Guide


Phi Phi Don is the largest of the six Phi Phi Islands, covering approximately 10 square miles. Located in the stunning Andaman Sea, just off the southern coast of Thailand, it stands out for its breathtaking scenery and vibrant atmosphere.

This island quickly became my favourite destination in Thailand, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and relaxation.

How to get here

You can take the ferry or speedboat to the island. Speedboats are obviously faster but are also more expensive. 

The main departure ports are Rassada Pier in Phuket, Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi and Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta. 

Speedboats and Ferries arrive at Tonsai Pier in Phi Phi Don. Once off the boat you will need to pay a small entry fee of 20 Baht per person which is an environmental tax fee which contributes twoards helping keep the island clean. 


Where to Stay 

1. Ton Sai Village 

This area is ideal for first-time visitors, partygoers and those who want to be in the heart of the action.

We stayed in a beach hut at the edge of this area. It was great for accessibility but also just far enough away for piece and quiet at night.

2. Loh Dalum 

This area is just north of Tonsai Village. It is known for its lively atmosphere, especially at night. Therefore it is a hub for backpackers and partygoers with numerous bars and beach clubs.

3. Laem Thong 

Situated on the north eastern shore of Phi Phi Don, this is a secluded and tranquil area which is perfect for those seeking a quiet getaway.

4. Long Beach 

Located on the south west of the island, this area is just a short boat ride away from Tonsai Village which makes it great for families by allowing easy access while maintaining a peaceful environment. 

 

Things to do 

1. Hike to the Viewpoints 


Phi Phi Don has three main viewpoints, each with a small fee for access. The first viewpoint is a 20-30 minute hike. The second, higher viewpoint takes about 45 minutes to reach and provides a more expansive view. A 15-minute walk from viewpoint 2 leads to the third, which offers a wider panoramic view for an additional fee. There’s also a lesser-known fourth viewpoint, offering a quieter, more secluded experience.

2. Visit Maya Bay


Famous for its appearance in The Beach, Maya Bay is a must-visit spot with turquoise waters and towering cliffs. Relax on the pristine beach, swim, and enjoy the serene surroundings, but note that access may be limited to preserve its beauty.

3. Visit Monkey Beach 


Monkey Beach is a popular spot known for its playful monkeys and clear, calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Accessible by boat or a short hike from the main village, the beach offers a unique chance to observe wildlife in a beautiful setting. However, visitors should be cautious, as the monkeys can sometimes be aggressive.

4. Watch a Fire Show 

Experience Phi Phi's lively nightlife by watching a thrilling fire show on the beach. Talented performers dazzle with impressive tricks, creating a spectacular display of fire juggling and dancing under the stars for an unforgettable evening.
